I’ve always dreamed of playing pro and playing in the WNBA,” Aaliyah shared with  Midland Daily News reporters in a recent Zoom availability. “To have my name among those lists and those rankings of projected top five, it’s crazy. If you were to ask me when I was 10 years old, I’d be, like, ‘no way.

Coach Lee Anna Osei, the Founder of Canletes and Head Coach at Royal Crown School in Toronto, expressed her belief in Aaliyah’s potential early on, stating, “I’ve never had any doubt that Aaliyah would shine at the highest level. When I first met her (as a middle school athlete) her sense of discipline, competitiveness and humility showed me early on that she was going to be one of the best Canadian female basketball athletes ever.” Her words shed light on the determination and character that set Aaliyah apart on her path to success.

Aaliyah’s exceptional performance at UCONN, where she averaged 13.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 59.3% from the field in her career, solidified her reputation as a formidable player. Among the prep schools vying for her talents, Aaliyah chose to play under the guidance of Head Coach Marlo Davis at Crestwood Preparatory College.

Coach Marlo Davis of Crestwood Prep spoke of his pride in Aaliyah, saying, “Myself, Crestwood, and the entire country of Canada are extremely proud of Aaliyah. She was referred to as a pro at a young age, and it’s exciting to see it now become her reality.” His admiration and support for Aaliyah’s journey showcase the impact she has had on her coaches and the basketball community.

Her impressive stats and contributions have also secured her a spot in the UCONN record books, highlighting her place among the program’s elite players.

As Aaliyah prepares to represent Canada at the Paris Olympics alongside fellow WNBA players, she remains grateful for the support and messages of encouragement she receives.
